Meet Our Therapists
Tree of Life Counseling was founded by Maria "Mica" Salazar Istre with the mission of offering inclusive, trauma-informed care to underrepresented communities in the Acadiana region
As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Mica brings extensive experience in multicultural counseling, advocacy, and mental health education. Since its founding, Tree of Life has grown into a dynamic team of compassionate clinicians, administrative professionals, and interns who are deeply committed to supporting mental and emotional well-being.
Each team member brings unique expertise to ensure that every client receives personalized care that honors their lived experience and individual needs. We specialize in working with individuals facing trauma, anxiety, immigration-related stress, and more, always in a safe, welcoming environment. Together, we help our clients find clarity, resilience, and healing on their path to mental wellness.

Who Can Benefit from a Mental Health Evaluation?

VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) Applicants
Individuals who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident partner or family member. Evaluations help validate the emotional toll of abuse in support of VAWA petitions.

U-VISA Applicants
Victims of certain qualifying crimes such as sexual assault, human trafficking, or hate crimes, who are cooperating with law enforcement. Evaluations detail the psychological impact of strengthening U-VISA applications.

T-VISA Applicants
Survivors of sex or labor trafficking who were coerced, defrauded, or forced into exploitative work. Our assessments document trauma symptoms that support T-VISA eligibility.

Our Evaluation Process
At Tree of Life Counseling and Consulting, our mental health evaluation process involves:

Initial Consultation
Begin your journey with a confidential meeting where you’ll discuss your personal concerns, mental health history, and therapy goals with a licensed therapist. This conversation helps establish trust and ensures your evaluation process is tailored to your unique needs.

Comprehensive Assessment
Participate in a thorough mental health assessment involving standardized psychological questionnaires, structured clinical interviews, and behavior evaluations. This step provides insight into your emotional well-being, cognitive patterns, and overall mental state, forming the foundation for accurate diagnosis and effective care planning.

Analysis and Diagnosis
Your therapist carefully reviews all collected information to identify patterns, symptoms, and possible diagnoses. Using evidence-based criteria, we ensure accurate identification of any mental health conditions and prepare comprehensive documentation for treatment planning or legal purposes if needed.

Treatment Recommendations
Based on your evaluation results, your therapist provides customized recommendations, including therapy modalities, possible referrals, and medication options. These recommendations serve as a roadmap to support your long-term mental wellness.
This thorough approach ensures that you receive an accurate diagnosis and a clear path forward.
